The 10th card in the Tarot's Major Arcana, The Wheel of Fortune signifies change. While writer Octavia Butler reminds us that "the only lasting truth is change," the Wheel of Fortune portends significant shifts and turns ahead. It encourages us to stay open, flexible, and responsive amidst the changes while also staying grounded in ourselves and our knowing. While the Wheel of Fortune implies large-scale change, we are not passive within this dynamic. Like the silk-spinning spiders, we are co-creating change with our communities and with the universe.
Spiders are one of the oldest living species on this planet, roughly 380 million years older than humans. There are over 45,000 species of spiders and they live in all habitats around the world. In addition to their 8 legs, most spiders also have 8 eyes. All spiders produce silk through silk-generating organs called spinnerets. While many use their silk to create webs, others use their silk for a range of purposes, such as to climb, to tether themselves safely so they don't fall, to make nests, and to wrap prey. This calendar depicts a Peacock tarantula, which lives in central southern India, and a Golden orb weaver, which lives in tropical and sub-tropical climates all around the world. While Golden orb weavers' population levels are steady, the Peacock tarantula is listed as Critically endangered on the IUCN Red List due to habitat loss and pet trading.
