Whale Moon Spell was a participatory performance set within a transformed iteration of the installation Under the Mirrored Moon during the May 2021 lunar eclipse.
Combining elements of spell-work, deep listening, guided meditation, and performance, Whale Moon Spell experimented with ways of strengthening connections to ourselves and to the environment around us.
Participants were guided through a meditation exploring themes of love, interspecies connection, and the cosmos. It incorporated aspects of composer Pauline Oliveros’ Sonic Meditations (1974), bio-acoustician Roger Payne’s album Songs of the Humpback Whale (1970), and field recordings by Josten Myburgh featured in A Sea Change. The evening concluded with conversation and homemade rose-infused tea and cookies.
